get out of my inbox!
Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 2:51PM I just went on an unsubscribe rampage for a huge variety of promotional emails I get all too frequently. Biggest offenders? Shecky's, Etsy and Victoria's Secret. At what point did you ever think I'd want to hear from you people every day?

It's the same concept of getting nothing but circulars and credit card applications in the regular, old snail mail. But there are opt-out of those programs as well. Luckily there are easy ways to rid your life of such clutter!
For those of you receiving credit card applications in the mail (all that pre-approved crap... pre-approved for identity theft is more like it) check out www.optoutprescreen.com. That will tidy it right up!
For opting out of telemarketing calls: https://www.donotcall.gov/
As for those pesky emails... Just scroll to the bottom and find their unsubscribe link. It's illegal not to have this option in emails, so just have a hunt in the fine print (of course).
Victoria's Secret did have an interesting unsubscribe option, where you could opt out of all communication or chose "less" communication with no more that 1 email per week. If only that was the standard!
I know what some of you are thinking... Jillian... you're a marketer! Should you really be promoting such avoidance? Uhm to that I say, there are more creative ways of attracting me as a consumer - I'm expensive.
I am still a sucker, though. I found squarespace (service I use to manage this website) through Twitter because I was actively trying to win an iPhone on a huge campaign they were doing. I decided to check out what they were all about and luckily they have a sick website (I'm pretty judgmental of websites) and here we are.
Go, be brave, opt out, unsubscribe!

Hi Jill! We were in the BSIB program together, Congratulations on your marriage!
Anyhoo, I was in the exact same boat as you, and I hate email. Although one of the reasons I usually had subscribed to newsletters was because the site didn't offer official feeds. I found this site http://www.feed43.com/ and this site http://www.dapper.net/dapp-factory.jsp useful for making custom feeds out of web pages of my choice and ridding my inbox of crap.
However, I feel that businesses, schools, and organizations are still very geared towards email and I don't know why. Usually feeds, maps, calendars, blogs, file sharing sites, etc., are much more suitable for the info being relayed in my opinion
