God Nytår! Happy New Year!

Hope you’re all in a good spirit with the prospect of a new year and new possibilities.  I certainly think that 2010 is going to be a big year for me and the hubs.  No babies, I know what you’re thinking and that’s not what I mean!

Here is some prime footage of our typical NYE in Copenhagen… enjoy my commentating.

Did I mention that I hate my own voice? ;)  I posted all of our NYE pictures on FB but I’ll add some here for fun.

I am really digging the whole halo headband look.  The sparkle halo headband is from Danish designer Friis & Co.  I gave it some extra sass by adding the feathery flower hair piece I had from H&M a few months back.

We spent New Years Eve with family for dinner and dessert and then drove in to Copenhagen to meet up with friends and get crazy.  We got a hotel room for the night because trying to find our way home at some absurd hour in the morning was likely to be just as expensive.

We met up with friends Sebastian and Lykke and some of their friends at a party.  Very fun! Christian & Sebastian lit fireworks in the street, well maybe you saw this in the video.  I think our heads hit the pillow a little after 5am. Whoa. Anyway here's a good pic of the men:

The hotel gave us a 2pm check out time, thank god.  And god bless Denmark for having McDonalds open on New Years day across the street from the hotel.  I never felt so American, haha.  Perfect hangover cure!

And with that... I haven’t officially decided on my 2010 resolutions.  Obviously they only start once I’m stateside again, which, sadly, will be tomorrow.  I am going to miss Christian a lot.  We’ve had some great QT together over the holidays this year.  Meget hyggeligt :)

However, I did dig up my 9 things in 2009 blog post to determine how much of last year’s resolutions I accomplished…

1. blog more – 21 entries in 2008 and 78 entries in 2009, check.
2. have better posture – yeah, hasn’t happened.
3. stop cursing like a sailor – somehow it’s gotten worse, ugh.
4. run more – a handful of 5ks, 10 mi race and a half marathon in ’09, check!
5. stay on top of my health – yep, even though I wished I kept my wisdom teeth in afterall! Check.
6. do something incredible at my job – I got promoted in ’09, can’t be all bad! Check.
7. keep my nails strong and healthy – I’m a little better with this… so… check.
8. manage finances better – top of the list 2010, for sure.
9. stay in better touch with friends and relatives – not sure how to measure this but I’m going to say check.

So I guess I achieved more than half of what I was after.  Not terrible.  There is some serious room for improvement, though.  I will have to have a serious think of my 2010 resolutions and keep you posted.

To 2010 o-m-g-ers!  Skål!

dansk jul | danish christmas

Christmas in Denmark was absolutely fantastic, everything was exactly as I imagined.  I love all of the Danish Christmas traditions.  I reckon some of them are Als family specific but as a whole, Denmark has many traditions that are common between everyone.  I suppose it’s the homogeneity of the society here, but it makes for very cozy holidays!

Mike Prible came down to celebrate with us, which was awesome.  He has been stuck in Sweden for some time now so I kind of insisted that he come down and spend some Scandinavian holidays with us.  I think he enjoyed it! :)

So what about these traditions?

Juletræ (Christmas Tree)

Christian and I got our own little tree. It’s not as Charlie Brown as I was originally expecting.  It’s no Curley traditional Frazer Fur but she’s a beauty just the same!  Danish Christmas trees typically have hearts, the Danish flag and even real candles amongst regular ornaments.  We left the lit candle business to Christian’s dad who hosted our Christmas Eve.  But the candles are only really lit when everyone is dancing around the tree and singing.  Yep, you read that right.  It’s pretty hard core.

Æbleskiver, Gløgg and “Konfekt”

Now… æbleskriver sits high in my top favorite things about Denmark.  I think it might be number three? Æbleskiver literally translates into “apple slices” which is kind of ridiculous seeing as apples have nothing to do with what I would describe as pancake balls!  O-M-G these little pancake balls are bites of heaven, I’m telling you.  They’re eaten with jam/marmalade and powdered sugar.  I find it disappointing that these are only really widely available during Christmas.  So I just need an æbleskriver maker!

Gløgg is a traditional Christmas red wine that is served hot with nuts and raisins mixed in.  YUM! We drink gløgg while we make konfekt and eat æbleskriver. :D  Konfekt just means candy making with soft nougat, marzipan, and melted chocolate supplemented by nuts, sprinkles, fruits, liquors, etc.

Nisses (Christmas Elves?)

I don’t know how to best describe a Nisse. I consider them to be small elves that wear Santa hats and they live in the attic and talk to the pets of the home.  Keeping them happy is important and involves leaving them porridge to eat, I believe.  When things go missing in the house, it’s likely that your Nisse is upset.  Nisses are never seen but they are a very popular Christmas decoration inspiration!

Juleaften (Christmas Eve)

Unlike in the States, the big Christmas get together with dinner, gifts, etc all happens on Christmas Eve.  Santa even stops by the house during the celebration.  Typically the night kicks off with dinner followed by singing and dancing around the Christmas tree (again, I’m serious) and then gift opening.  Santa visits at some point before the gift opening, usually towards the end of dinner.  After gift opening there are some more desserts (konfekt and cookies and such) and socializing.  Some families then head to midnight mass followed by more food late night afterwards.  This year we called it a night after socializing for a bit.

Christmas dinner!

Christmas dinner in Christian’s family has always been hugely traditional.  I’ve been told that way back when families either had pork or duck as the main dish depending on how much money they had.  Pork being for the poorer families and duck for the richer.  So now many families (including ours) eat both!

One other must-have in many Danish families is Ris a la mande!  O-M-G this also makes my top favorites list.  This is a sweet rice pudding mixed with whipped cream, sugar vanilla and almond pieces.  This is served cold and then with a warm cherry sauce on top.  Drooling just thinking about it.  There is a game to look for a whole almond in your portion.  Whoever has an entire almond wins a prize.  Part of the game involves keeping it a secret as long as you can.  Guess who won this year?  Yep Mike found the whole almond in his second bite… so imagine my surprise when he goes for seconds without even mentioning it!  I was pissed!  Haha. JK!  Christian has not won, ever.  Not in 26 years.  Even I won several years ago.  Poor thing. ;)

Other traditional foods are boiled potatoes, brown sugar potatoes (boiled potatoes covered in caramelized sugar), warm red cabbage, and gravies of course.  So delicious.  I might need to make dinner immediately…

Juledag (Christmas Day)

Recovery from over eating and drinking.  Perhaps coupled with more overeating when visiting extended family.  In our case I made breakfast burritos to absorb any red wine headache still lingering.  We opened presents from Mike, our stockings (I have to keep some American traditions, duh!), and gifts from Santa to hubby and wifey.

Check out some photos from our superb Christmas.  We are so lucky and grateful for all that we have and all the family we can share it with.  And we were so glad to have Mike celebrate with us this year!

**Some of these images are rather blurry, hard to catch the essence of the lighting so we were fussing with camera settings quite a bit!

the grand finale

To sum up our weekend, in a word, it would be... accomplished.  Christian's last weekend in town was nonstop, but a lot of fun!  We ended on a high note for Christian here at Finale in Coolidge Corner.  Check out these scrumptiousnesses:

Which do you think I like best?  The handsome Dane, the ice cream, the molten cake or the espresso martini? :)  Difficult to choose but I guess I'll go with my Dane as the what I liked best about that night.

Saturday we went bowling at Jillians with Megan (Focaccia) and her boyfriend Matt.  We got some grub and only Matt bowled over 100.  It was lots of fun!  Afterwards we took a walk to Matt's office in which he grabbed free tickets to the Museum of Science for Christian and I.  Saweet.  Thanks Matt.  Check out his blog - lots of funnies and head scratchers and 'ohhhh that's interesting's!

We spent two hours roaming the general exhibit halls, highlights include the visual perception exhibit and of course the butterfly garden - helloooo. :)  Beautiful, beautiful butterflies.  We each had a few "hitchhiker" butterflies land on our shoulders - so cute!  After the exhibit halls closed and I stopped acting like a child in the gift shop we went to a Guitar Hero laser show.  I fell asleep during the last song, haha.

Took the E train and headed to the beloved Cheesecake Factory where you can eat like kings with left overs enough for three more meals.  1.5 hour wait and Christian and I have a new business plan - he is genius.  I would tell you what it is, but I'd have to kill you.  Stuffed to the gills we headed home.

Sunday we woke up to gorgeous and profound 60 degree weather in Boston in NOVEMBER.  Nice.  Went to brunch at Charlies on Newbury St and sat outside.  Perfection.  Took a stroll and then got on the T over to Cambridgeside Galleria to start CHRISTMAS shopping.  Yep you read that correctly.

Few gifts bought we headed home to Brookline and met Lykke for dinner at Zaftigs.  Matzo ball soup and potato pancakes are just about the best thing in the world aside from great Danish company.  As a grand finale to the weekend and Christian's trip we headed to... well you already know where.

Now I'm here trying to catch up with the digital world as I've been somewhat MIA in the personal realm for the past month.  I've got a awesome invite to Google Wave from a developer I work with in the UK and not a figgen clue how to use it.  Even the Wikipedia explanation didn't quite clear it up for me.  Hmm.

Do you Wave?  Can you Wave with me?  (Don't worry Sarah - save that one wave of the flag for you!)

What else is new in the virtual world - anything more fun then our weekend?  I bet not!

I'm Mrs. Als!

Well, I hope I still have some faithful readers out there because my blog has been completely neglected for a few weeks now. Kind of like my running and working out. But have to get back on the horse so to speak!  But the wedding... so worth all the time away from normal things :)

The wedding was hands down the best, ever, period. OMG! Loved every second of it, we were world's luckiest, most loved couple. Recapping the day/night with friends and family has been almost nonstop since, we're all going through a little wedding post partum.

I'm in the process of putting up pictures on the site, will let you know when they're all up. Right now I only have the engagement and rehearsal dinner pictures up. Our pictures turned out BEAUTIFUL thanks to my grandpa, uncle Paul and Amy Graybill.  We're (I'm) pretty much obsessed!

There are lots more things to explain about the wedding but I'm saving it for the wedding blog as part of my virtual scrapbook!

Christian left on Friday and it was definitely hard to say goodbye to my handsome hubby. He was so sick, poor thing.  Well, we both were!

I wanted to share a story with you all that restored my faith in the world a little bit. Christian realized once he got to Paris for his connecting flight that he was missing his wallet (a rubberband around a wad of cash and cards). Other than on the first plane the only other place it could be was in the Zipcar we took to the airport.

I woke up to Chr's message and called Zipcar but no one had reported it and the car was already rented for the whole day.  But low and behold technology prevails and Christian gets a Facebook message from a kid who found his "things". By the nature of Zipcars there could have been 20 different people in and out of it before this guy.  I was pretty sure the money had gone missing and only the cards were left.

Anyway I met what turned out to be a mere high school kid in front of Trader Joes and he handed me the wad, cash and all! I was so shocked and so happy. I handed him $50 for being such a great samaritan. Love Brookline, a real stand-up community!

This post feels like I'm rambling but that's only because I have so much to tell you, or my computer rather. Ahhhh.

More to come!

By the way - sending in my change of name to Social Security this week.  Should I keep my middle name as Michelle or change it to Curley?  Either way I'll go by Jill/Jillian Als.  Just wondering if I should honor Curley in my middle name, just sounds awful - Jillian Curley Als bahhh. Thoughts?
